“Strange, considering it all now after a night’s sleep, that I’d had no premonition of what awaited. That seems to be the nature of life, however. Things that ought to come with warnings rarely do.”

The Year is 1884 and Emma M. Lion has, at long last, gained her majority. Entering a golden age of friendship with Pierce, Islington, and Hawkes, Emma is confident she will manage whatever comes her way. It is The Season she must help Arabella secure a husband, while navigating the threat of Aunt Eugenia, the unflagging adoration of Charles Goddard, and the amusing unpredictability of St. Crispian’s. But the secrets of her trusted friends are what might very well bring about disaster.

Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.

Readers have compared Beth Brower’s writing to Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, P.G. Wodehouse, and L. M. Montgomery.

Beautiful work from Brower, an uncommon alchemical mixture of hidden bruises unexpectedly revealed, sun-sparkle and birdcall and endless verbal jousts. These journals are a maddening, perplexing, delightful journey that continue to reward investment.

The final book – for now – delivered answers and many more questions. What will I do as I wait for BOOK 9?? Reread this gem of a series of course!

This whole series is a wonderful, wonderful read. It takes place in a beautifully quirky area of London with an entertaining cast of characters. I recommend anyone to pick up the whole series – you won’t regret being a part of this enchanting world!

    Worth the wait…
Of course, having only just discovered Beth Brower and Emma M Lion in November and tearing through the first 7 journals in four days- a Dec 3rd launch date that came early on Thanksgiving was not that long a wait! Beautifully written – longer and more emotional intensity than 1-7. Great observations, witty, but can really deliver a punch. I already gifted copies to nieces ,siblings and joined her website . More Journals to come per Brower over the next ten years. But best thing I have read in more than 10 years – so worth the wait to spend that time with Emma, Islington, Pierce and Hawkes. Read it and you will agree, one word describes it best – ALCHEMY!

Another Great One by Beth Brower!
This is another great addition to the Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion series. Beth Brower is an authorial genius. I really enjoyed this entire series which is a crowning achievement. Beth Brower’s characters are compelling and lovable and readers will find it easy to relate to them. If you are interested in a CLEAN slow burn romance, then this series (and this book) are for you. Reader beware, do not read this book series out of order, this is book 8 of this ongoing series. I am very much looking forward to consuming the rest of them. This paperback edition is well put together however the cover will show fingerprints if you have dirty or oily fingers. The pages on this edition are crisp and clean and the type is ready to read. This book accommodates a bookmark very well and is unlikely to crease in so doing.

    What An Adventure
Wow. Beth Brower is the best. So much of this book was just beautiful and poetic and it truly felt like we were all at Stonecrop with Emma. Because the whole month of June is spent at Stonecrop and not at St. Crispians, it is not necessarily as whimsical and light hearted as Emma sometimes is, but the character and story development are so deep and thoughtful. As always with Emma, lots of wit and delightful moments still ensue.

    best book series
Cheerful, compelling, beautifully written. The narrator carries you along in a happy little universe. I laugh out loud, maybe cried, loved every second. Highly anticipate the next arrival. St Crispians is the best

    So so good!!
I love this series! The characters are so great and fun to read and learn about. Their interactions are so entertaining and heart wrenching, in a good way. Such good writing and story telling. Secrets revealed and more kept. Highly recommend reading them in order.

    A delight
I enjoyed these books so much that I spent money to read them on my kindle app, which is much worse than buying the actual books (then at least I would have books on my library shelves! (wink)). But the local library had a hold list at least 3 people deep for each volume. If you like your heroines to be the person you know you are, but never dared to be (conventions, dear). And possible suitors are all good-looking and good, that you don’t know who to root for… and you like your books comfortable, a bit whimsical, but anchored in possible… and an author that really knows how to weave a story and flesh out a character… and how many volumes will there be anyway? But you are also fine if they go on forever bc you like the characters in the books just as much as your real life characters, then I recommend these books. All 8 volumes so far.A very good and fun writer. The characters are superb and endearing in their own ways. Great storyline. Good, clean, fun… though, a bit scandalous for that time period. It’s definitely not your normal regency romance book. Not by a long shot.

    Achingly Beautiful
Near to poetry, this eighth book in a most intriguing and entertaining series, is emotional and profound. With some scenes as heartbreaking as it gets, this book also contains light humor and tender moments. The writing is superb, eliciting deep thought and self-reflection. Powerful!

    Amazing! Couldn’t put it down!
“Hawkes sat a moment, then he lifted his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, thereby hiding a slight line of amusement. Or would it be a line of slight amusement? No, I believe I was correct in the first. The line was slight. The amusement? Likely vast.”Brilliantly written, beautifully poetic, endearing characters, exciting story, secrets that I was dying to discover…Emma is hilarious. Her personality is the best! She is spirited, intelligent, unexpected and fun. I loved the shenanigans as always! This group of friends has my heart as I have said before, but it must be said again. I loved getting more of Emma, Hawkes, Pierce and Islington!Things to love:🤍Visiting Stonecrop🤍The Ferns🤍Cricket🤍St. Crispians🤍These friends🤍The alchemy🤍All the emotions you will feel🤍Lapis Lazuli house🤍The beautiful writingVisiting Stonecrop was my absolute favorite! I felt like I was there! It felt so dreamy and peaceful! The author’s words painted the most stunning and glorious picture of the English countryside! Truly beautiful! This book had me pondering, laughing, smiling, my heart was aching, and I couldn’t stop reading. I couldn’t get enough!Once again this book kept me up into the wee hours of the morning. This book pulled me in and I didn’t want to leave St. Crispians, these characters, and this wonderful story….Content: abuse mentioned, handful of Bible swears
