The most faithful version of Brother Lawrence’s classic text.

This edition includes:
– 26 hand-drawn illustrations
– The controversial Sixth Letter (censored by most publishers)
– The unabridged Conversations
– Lawrence’s complete set of Spiritual Maxims
– His biography, first published in French in 1694

Finally, to supplement the original source documents, this edition includes a new timeline of the major events in Brother Lawrence’s life. This timeline integrates events mentioned in the Conversations, Letters, and other documents into a single brief narrative.

Brother Lawrence came from a humble family. As a monk, he worked with his hands: first in the kitchen and later repairing sandals. He was not a priest or theologian. He didn’t preach or serve communion. After his death, he was not formally recognized as a saint. And yet, a steady stream of priests, nuns, and laypeople sought his advice on the spiritual life.

“For me the time of action does not differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, I possess God in as great tranquility as when upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.” – Brother Lawrence

all things for the love of godall things for the love of god

“As for what passes in me at present, I cannot express it. I have no pain or difficulty about my state, because I have no will but that of God, which I endeavor to accomplish in all things, and to which I am so surrendered that I would not take up a straw from the ground against His order, or from any other motive than purely that of love to Him.” – Fifth Letter

fire consumes the strawfire consumes the straw

“The soul speaks to God, heart to heart, and over the soul thus holding converse there steals a great and profound peace. All that passes without concerns the soul no more than a fire of straw, which the more it flares, the sooner burns itself out; and rarely indeed do the cares of this world ever intrude to trouble the peace that is within.” – Spiritual Maxims

“Let us begin to be devoted to Him in good earnest. Let us cast everything besides out of our hearts. He would possess them alone. Beg this favor of Him…I hope from His mercy the favor to see Him within a few days. Let us pray for one another. I am, in our Lord, Yours” – from Brother Lawrence’s final letter, sent six days before his death

This is a wonderful resource, and should be read by all who seek to go deeper in their relationship with God. Perhaps we are bored by our mundane work or life; this book, if we take it to heart, will cure that. This particular book, though, goes much further by presenting not just that classic writing of Brother Lawrence (who lived in the 17th century) but also letters and conversations with Brother Lawrence. As the introduction of the book says, Brother Lawrence wasn’t an ordained priest or pastor; he was a simple man who practiced the Presence of God, which involved every aspect of his life. This led him to become a man that many religious people visited to more fully understand spiritual practices and life. This is a must read, and better this be read early in one’s journey with Christ, rather than later. It is precious.

    Humble, Simple, Sincere
The author leads the reader gently into the heart and mind of Brother Lawrence. I appreciated the explanation of the additions and changes in this edition. The story is broken down beautifully and is told in a way that we feel like we really know Brother Lawrence. His story sets a bar in attaining deep love for God and shows the way to be in constant companionship with him. Such a simple and sincere faith. We should all strive for this!

Develop a deeper sense of gratitude
There’s something so liberating about this book. Spirituality exists seamlessly within every small ordinary part of daily life apart from being limited to churches or quiet locations. One does not need to stop everything to connect with God. The approach to spirituality does not require focused concentration for extended periods of absolute quiet. Your heart may turn to Him at any time throughout preparing food right when you listen to friends or when experiencing fatigue or moments of anger without any special preparations. Spirituality does not need to be mysterious or removed from everyday activities because this book dismantles the false belief that spirituality exists outside of daily life. Faith becomes achievable through this approach which removes feelings of distance or comprehension difficulty. Every demanding or disorderly circumstance gives us two essential aspects: it offers tranquility as well as a spiritual bond and serves as a reminder that we remain with God through our struggles. Your approach to ordinary experiences needs modification rather than altering your activities. Even routine activities along with regular undertakings and disorganized situations have the potential to reveal God’s presence.

Interesting read if you are interested in the Letters from Brother Lawrence.
A book mainly for religious people. I never heard of Brother Lawrence before so it was informative to read about his life and his letters and conversations. The illustration that go with the letters and good and keep you interested. Well done book, I shall read more.

    An Important Book
The content of this book is important. It is both inspirational and educative. My only suggestion comes not with the writings but rather the cover. The front piece looks a bit childlike. I feel it should be more sophisticated so it would be in line with the interior. Anyway, I am very happy to have had the opertunity to study it.

Wonderful edition of this all-time classic
Why should you buy a book that is available in the public domain? When a publisher lovingly puts the effort into gathering this information together and puts it into a beautifully crafted and illustrated version it is worth rewarding. If you haven’t ever read this classic, pick this one up today and get started. :)

    Great! I loved this book.
This book is about the life of a man who lived in the 1600s and his relationship with God. He was dedicated to God in his relationship with him continuously throughout the day everyday, in every aspect of life. I cannot recommend this book high enough for people who want a great relationship with God. I was surprised how good this book was, and it is a very strong encouragement to me as I strive to grow close to God.
