Interesting characters
[...]Great premise, entertaining. A fast-paced fantasy adventure with a lot of different fantasy creatures. The main character is a Mermaid and she will team up with a group of “rebels” to recover the corpse of her king. This is a stand-up against oppression and many other contemporary social/political issues. A plot-driven adventure for those who love a quest with mermaids, vampires, goblins, orcs… in the same story. As a gamer, I would say this gave me more World of Warcraft and the new Baldur’s Gate.

This book gives me all the cozy warm fuzzies, makes me laugh, has tons of action, and the sweetest hint of romance.The found family was such an eccentric hodgepodge of characters. They were all very different, but worked so well together.“Vampires?”…“Krakens, Mermaids, Goblins, Orcs? What’s a dash of spicy seasoning to our mixed entrée of mediocrity?”It’s a dash of awesome is what it is. I loved the unique characters, magic, and world that was built here, and I can’t wait to go back.I also have to give special attention to the MMC Jayvin, who is a treasure that must be protected at all costs. He is savage and formidable, but says and does the most precious things you could imagine. When you find out about the charm he repeatedly uses, you might break a little bit. 🥺 There is also no one more perfect for him than Tetra, the purest ball of sunshine with the biggest heart. I need more of this world and crew stat!

[...]4.75 ☆ rounded to 5.Firstly, my many thanks to the author for the chance to read this as an ARC! It was a fun read and I’d definitely recommend it and I’m excited to add a physical copy to my shelves!I loved this book! The band of such different characters was a lot of fun! I loved their banter and the found family dynamic so much. I especially loved how Tetra starts out rather shy but grows stronger over the course of the book. And let’s not forget Jayvin — he stole my heart from the very first page he appeared on. I loved the trauma/mental health rep. The world and magic felt unique. I loved that even though they are technically trapped in a shielded city on the edge of the ocean, it didn’t feel small. There’s lots of action and I loved the heist and final conflict with the emperor.So why is it not a perfect 5 stars? I felt like the beginning was a bit too easy with Loach just readily agreeing to help Tetra. Actually all of the initial friendships between the different characters felt a bit too easy and like instant acceptance. I would’ve much preferred if these built more slowly because it would have felt a bit more realistic to me, especially because some of this band were criminal sorts — you’d think there would be more mistrust regardless of how honest Tetra is. A lot of the situations they found themselves in also felt a bit too easy and it distracted me a couple times.Overall though, this was such a fun and rather quick read that I can forgive the small things that bothered me.

Gathering a team of others who each have their own squabbles with the Emperor they might just get the job done. Or will they?Each character was wonderful! I loved Tetra’s courage to push through her inactions from her past to right the future. Agatha had me cackling! Jayvin was just ADORABLE, and a little murd3ry 😂. The patience Tetra had with Jayvin 🥰 The way Jayvin adored Tetra 🥵The story is fade to black/closed door. The balance between their mission and the romance was perfect!!!

Loved this book
[...]This had everything you could want in a book. There was banter, romance, plot twists, found family, a corrupt king, and a heist. I loved that the characters were all a mix of different species, which made the chemistry between the characters interesting and amusing. The main characters themselves were fantastic, and I LOVED the relationship between Tetra and Jay <3 . I liked that the romance was there but it was closed door so the story wasn't all about spice, though things are implied. I could not get enough of this book, I fell asleep while reading it. It was one thing after another for Tetra and the crew. I loved this book and definitely plan to re-read when the mood strikes. Highly recommend!
