Some grammatical errors in this book which I find off putting. Not keen on only 2 out of 12 so called epic sports people are women, I am sure you could have balanced this up. The information tend to only go so far as In I had to look up on google why Babe Ruth was called Babe and what his real name actually this in my opinion should have been covered.

Nice list of epic insights into the greatest athletes around. I hope there is a follow up as there are many other sports and also many others within those sports who could argue there case. In general, I liked the book. I hope for a collection of these books for those interested in this type of guide.

This book of stories for teen boys includes 12 mini biographies of sports stars – ‘GOATS’ in their fields (‘Greatest of All Time’). The emphasis is very much towards the US, with the likes of Brady, Babe Ruth and Kurt Angle (I had to look him up), although Usain Bolt and Lionel Messi also get a look-in. The tales themselves are competent and written at the right level for teens – slightly breathy in adulation, but also informative, and I do like the colourful and stylised images of the stars at the start of each chapter. All-in-all, I think this is a decent volume that kids into sport might well enjoy.

Very poorly written
[...]At first I thought this was AI generated but there are too many grammatical issues. This book is awful. Incoherent. Poorly written. Boring. Do not expose your young reader to such poorly written drivel.

Not great…
[...]I bought this for my 15-year-old son who loves sports. It appears to be written for children who are younger with the exception of the Michael Phelps section where it talks about “puffing the magic dragon” and getting a DUI. I know those things happen, but it could’ve been presented differently, in my opinion, for children.

I liked the style
[...]This book has a chatty, talkative style, that is the perfect tone for teens and young adults. I liked the choices of althetes, especially including Simone Biles. Very enjoyable, with a lot of good research and detail.

Gateway to reading?
[...]As a high school English teacher, I see freshmen boys everyday who just hate to read. But many of them like sports, so a book like this is appealing to them. The spacing between sentences is wide and easy to read, so it won’t initially intimidate a young reader. As a former sportswriter, what I appreciate about this book is that is educates young readers about great athletes from the past. Sure, author Gerry Bird has to include recent athletes such as LeBron James, Simone Biles, Tom Brady, and Tiger Woods. But he also writes about long ago stars such as Babe Ruth and lesser-known athletes such as wrestler Kurt Angle. This is definitely geared toward young readers age 12-16, so I wouldn’t recommend it for sophomores and up. But for middle schoolers and high school freshmen, it is a solid way to expose them to the world of books—and it could possibly open the door for them to become avid readers.
