Purchased for my children in hopes of giving them something other than video games. It arrived on a Monday, I set it up and started teaching them names of pieces, how to place them and basic moves. I am no master at the game in any way. By Wednesday they were beating me at the game! They were also correcting me on some things I had forgotten. Like the pawn can move twice on first move…This board comes with everything you need to learn how to play chess.It is a great way to introduce chess to your family. You never know, it might just become a new favourite pastime and great way to connect with your children as you play and learn together.

Great chess board and pieces for absolute beginner

I love this set so much. My kids love the cards, the pieces look great, and the box is well designed so it’s a fun experience to open it and set it up.Here are a few things to know though (none of which bothered me at all):- The board is made out of regular board game material and it folds into a square with creases just like any board game.- The bases of the pieces can be tight and difficult to take off.- The pieces seem a bit short and light without the bases, so I’m leaving them on even though I know how the pieces move.- The cards go beyond the basic moves and give some puzzles and tips. Nothing that can’t be found online but it’s kind of cool to read the little facts and tips.- In my opinion, the side with where the pieces go is distracting and not required. My 5 year old learned quickly the starting position of the pieces. I think it would be better to have a card with a picture of the start position and have the second side a different colour scheme instead.

Cheap learning chess set but not built to last
[...]This chess set if good for a beginner to play with and learn to play chess. I use to have a similar set when I was a kid but it was much better built. This pieces are hollow and will break if one accidentally get stepped on and the board folds in to a square instead of a rectangle so there is a greater chance that the board will rip with more areas that it folds. This set would be better if the pieces were solid and had some felt on the bottom, and if the board was a little thicker and folded into a rectangle.It is still decent for learning but not build to last for a long time. I’m going to look for a better teaching set that I can buy that will last a lot longer.

Informative for kids
[...]I am not a chess player so I found it very beneficial that all game pieces are marked with the directions that they can move on the board. Maybe that’s the way it is with all other kid centered games, but I found this to be really helpful. The pieces seem to be of good quality and our son enjoyed it.

[...]I vividly remember learning how to play chess on a set just like this! Bought for my kiddos since the youngest can’t read and the oldest who could read the instructions still has a hard time remembering how the pieces move but doesn’t want my help when we’re playing (she is determined to beat me on her own). The only reason I would consider docking a star is that it is a basic, cardboard mat/board. It’s just like any other game board so I expect it to last, I just wish it was sturdier. This is just a preference and does not affect the play, as long as my toddler is patient when we pack up, I expect the board to last.

Beginners chess game
[...]This is my second purchase on the chess set. I work with middle school kids in after school day care. It’s a great starter set for them. I had to buy another one because the game caught on with some of the other kids. The engraving on the pieces help them to remember how they move. Pieces are sturdy and a decent size.
