Navigating Feedback at Work, Home, and Everywhere Else unveils the transformative power of feedback that will lead you into more joy, fulfillment, and integration in your social networks.

In the bestselling book, Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well by Douglas Stone & Sheila Heen, the authors wrote: “We receive a deluge of feedback—from bosses, colleagues, friends, family—yet it rarely improves performance. The problem is that we’ve focused all of our attention and training on the feedback giver. Instead, it is the feedback receiver who decides whether to make use of the feedback and improve.”

Navigating Feedback at Work, Home, and Everywhere Else focuses entirely on the receiver of difficult feedback. How you respond to that feedback determines, to a large extent, your destiny.

Seriously, your destiny?

Seriously.

Using video clips from top business consultants and interactive journaling, author Brian Byrd will walk you through the skills necessary to embrace difficult feedback in a way that will not only improve your personal life but also your professional life.

Brian Byrd invites you on a journey to the rest of your life, which could very well lead to the years that become…the best of your life!

Timely and Vital Topic – Excellently Conveyed
Excellent book- a must read for your family or work-team members alike! Navigating Feedback prompts readers to engage by posing thoughtful questions throughout and even includes youtube video links for enhanced critical thinking of the content. This is not just a “how-to” kind of book (although it is that as well), it also explores the variables which play a role in one’s desire to receive feedback and grow. Especially in today’s world where cancel culture is so rampant- and so many are willing to discontinue relational connections because the other doesn’t think in the same way- it’s essential to grow our skill sets for hearing and receiving opposing opinions, and the feedback which typically is expressed in the same vein.

Unique and powerful approach to an important subject
This exceptional book is unique and powerful in many ways, not the least of which is Dr. Byrd’s use of video clips from top business consultants and interactive journaling. I do not recall a more extensive study on this subject, which by the way, covers a much broader subject than navigating feedback in the workplace. The esteemed doctor takes on the broader subject of navigating feedback within relationships, which is applicable to every person. I highly recommend this book. I will be gifting it to my children and grandchildren. As the book states, “how you respond to feedback determines, to a large extent, your destiny,” which of course implies that we MUST get it right because in this arena of our lives a lot is at stake.

Preparing for and receiving a performance review can be a nerve-wracking and stressful process
Navigating Feedback at Work, Home, and Everywhere ElseBy Brian Byrd, M.D., with Ken GirePreparing for and receiving a performance review can be a nerve-wracking and stressful process. But it also can be stressful for the person delivering the review, especially if it involves negative feedback. As someone who has delivered literally hundreds of performance reviews over my professional career, I can attest to that. But it doesn’t have to be.The book Navigating Feedback at Work, Home, and Everywhere Else, by Fort Worth physician Brian Byrd, M.D., can help on both sides of that process.Byrd is Tarrant County Public Health Director and is a practicing physician who founded and served as CEO of Texas Family Medicine, a primary care physician group, for nearly a quarter of a century. He currently serves as Medical Director for Palm Primary Care.He also was a member of the Fort Worth City Council and the council’s appointment to the board of MedStar Mobile Healthcare, the area’s ambulance authority, where I served 12 years as the Mayor’s appointment. Byrd was chair of the board during his tenure.MedStar had a sophisticated evaluation system for the employees who reported directly to the board, including the CEO and the organization’s Medical Director as well as the organization’s General Council.Byrd’s book provides detailed processes for both the employee to be reviewed and the person delivering the review. But it goes beyond that.It recognizes that feedback occurs in multiple setting in life outside the workplace. Friendships and marriages also involve forms of feedback.Byrd is widely read and a movie nerd, and the book is filled with quotes from today and antiquity and clips of movies and TED Talks and other videos that address development of empathy and tips for self-development that can lead to strengthened relationships not only with ourselves personally but with others.Feedback delivered with from an empathic understanding is much more beneficial than feedback dispassionately. As I said earlier, I have a lot of professional experience in this area, but the expanded my understanding of the processes and was a delightful read. I highly recommend it.The book is available in both print and Kindle versions. The Kindle version contains links to the clips and talks. The print version contains URLs and search terms to reach those same resources. In the interest of full disclosure, I edited a much earlier version of Byrd’s manuscript. And as a journalist I have written on human trafficking and on Unbound, an anti-trafficking organization where both his wife and daughter are deeply involved. And I have been and am friends with Byrd’s parents.

    Improves receiving-and giving-feedback
Interesting and engaging read. While the book provides many examples from healthcare settings, the lessons are applicable to any setting. This book provides good context for receiving professional feedback but is also a useful tool for anyone who provides feedback to others and wants to ensure that the feedback is useful and assists in employee growth. Highly recommend.
