Refreshingly honest
[...]In the age of performative, Instagram-ready, cropped, filtered, and highly curated glimpses into other people’s “true lives” comes someone who has been real with all of us from the very beginning. No matter what, with Susan what you see is what you get, and what you get is never disappointing. Once again I find myself mesmerized and enchanted by one of the realest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of coming across. I hope she’s not done, because I’m ready for more.

A truly amazing book.
[...]For me…this was quite fascinating seeing how such an amazing woman remains strong thru her career and how others brought her down. Yet, she doesn’t give in and continues fighting the good fight.

A Very enlightening memoir on where she’s been these last 15 years.
[...]Sad and uplifting at the same time. If you were curious about Susan as I was, which led me to this memoir, then read it. It clarifies a few things and will make you angry over how and why someone could be taken advantage of so bad. You will have to read between the lines when it comes to the people who rec’d her money, since I’m sure she’s avoiding lawsuits, but I’ll say it for her. That many of the people who worked for her all live in mansions she helped them get and she’s living…well, you need to read to find out.

can’t stop thinking about this book…
[...]I bought the book as soon as I knew about it. I read it in one sitting, late at night. Two days later and I’m still thinking about it. There are many feelings this brings up for me.I was one of the younger Susan Powter fans – I discovered her Stop the Insanity book in a library as a teenager, years after she stepped back from the spotlight – I probably read the book ten times. I’ve bought the book at least three times because I always need a copy of it no matter where I move to. There are few books that jump off the page and grab me and shake me by the shoulders, but Stop the Insanity did that. It explained why I was fat and what I could do about it. It made me laugh. I owe a lot to Susan Powter – through the years I have bought – AND USED THEM TO DEATH – her old VHS workout dvds, the Trailer Park Yoga dvd, and the Lifestyle Exchange DVDs she put out (year 2008 or 2010-ish?). It took me a loooooong time to get good habits built, but I eventually got very lean and very healthy. Over the years I’ve had fun with lots of workout programs, but I still love Susan’s. There is nobody like her. Her energy is off the charts. I would watch her YouTube videos which were fantastic…. and then nothing. She dropped off the map. The dieting insanity got EVEN WORSE (keto, carnivore…. holy cow), and I kept waiting for Susan to come back and set people straight on the facts. Nothing. And Then Em Died answers where she was. It doesn’t answer every question a long-time fan like me would have, but Susan tells a new story, brutal and beautiful all at once. I have had to live in some sketchy and scary places, working multiple jobs for YEARS, trying just to get by, and it’s a nightmare. Our media makes you think people are only in those spots if you have some kind of a drug problem, but it’s just not true. There are very few jobs that pay a living wage anymore, and if you don’t have a trust fund or family members with financial means to help, you are cast out. And that was when I was young! Susan Powter has had to face the hardships that come with the horrific age discrimination that is faced by every woman after the age of…. I’ve lost count of the number of women I know who once had okay jobs who can’t get hired now and are doing minimum-wage, backbreaking manual labor when they should be pleasantly retired. This book is many things. It’s a memoir. It’s a warning. It’s an incredible story. If you’re going through hard times, it’s a reminder you are not the only one.And it’s a love letter to Em.

I will always owe Susan Powter a debt paid in Gratitude
[...]i first encountered Susan Powter in the early 90’s- i was a young fat housewife just steeping in low self esteem being crushed by my life. I turned on ABC’s The Home Show, and Gary Collins introduced their new Health and Wellness expert. Out she came in Barbie Doll Blonde Wig, aerobics clothes and valley girl speak, and she began an exercise routine. Then…THEN.. she ripped the wig off, and spoke directly to the camera TO ME. She looked me right in the eyes, and told me the truth. My journey to wellness began that day. A few years later, i found one of her exercise DVD while shopping. I bought it and hid it because my then husband would have made fun of me. The first day i put the video in, I could barely make it past the warm up. I laid down on the floor , out of breath and crying like a baby, but the next day, i did it again. and Again .And Again.I interacted with Susan again in the 00’s when she founded her NING community and the Xchange program. I had just been diagnosed as insulin resistant, and once again, I found her and got back on track. I also found on line friends, and we are still friends today. Some of them, I have met face to face, and we vacation together. I found my tribe through following Susan.I read the first sentence of her memoir, and burst into tears. I remember EM. I remember the beginning of the needed dental work. We had no idea she was struggling financially. This telling of her story, and allowing herself to be vulnerable while telling of it, makes me love her all the more. What happened to her could happen to just about any woman in today’s America. It broke me all over again. She is resilent, and wise, strong and one of the most intellgent people i have ever been lucky to encounter.I will always always always carry deep gratitude in my being for her existence. She was brave enough to take on patriarchy at a time most of us had no idea what that word even meant. She was brave enough to call out the hypocrisy and malarkey of the diet industry. She was brave enough to tell young women in the 90’s to believe in our WORTH as HUMAN BEINGS.I wish her much continues success. I will find a way to meet her anywhere in the USA as she tours in her RV so i can thank her in person. Years ago, I called in to her Blog Talk Radio show, and talked to her. We talked about exercise and she mentionned running. I said, “oh Susan, Kimmy Don’t Run.” She said ,” Well, you are going to. You are not only gonna run, you are gonna fly” …and i have. And i owe the beginning of my growth into myself to her encouragement.
