I am a big fan of AI but also aware of its pitfalls so I wanted to understand more about how it can be used in education because I know this is an active area of discussion. It was great to realise that it can not only be used to save time for teachers in the standard admin tasks, but it can help with tailored learning supporting, not replacing, teachers.I would have like more detail around some of the trials and case studies mentioned as well as practical examples of how to work out where and how it could be used. As the book points out this is needed especially because the inputs are so important along with potential bias in the datasets.Overall its a bit repetitive but the author has provided lots of great pointers on what to consider, and, later in the book, specific education software suggestions which as great and it will help anyone to know how to begin the process. It would be a useful book for those who don’t know much about the subject.

A helpful resource for developing long-term strategies in a quickly changing environment
[...]As an educator with almost 20 years of experience teaching college composition courses, generative AI is perhaps the most foundation-shaking development that I have seen in my career. I, and many of my fellow instructors, have been wrestling with the implications and the reality of easily-accessible AI since ChatGPT’s introduction in November, 2022. Ms. Summers has provided a resource which doesn’t just address the “hottest tool right now” cycle, but instead focuses on the basic questions that every educator needs to confront. What do my students need to learn about AI? What are the ethical implications I need to focus on? What are the privacy issues to consider? What are the access and bias issues to be addressed? On the practical front, the book gives well-thought out and pedagogically sound ideas about how to use generative AI in the classroom, as well as ways to harness the power of AI to lighten the teacher load. This book is an excellent resource for any educator confronting the presence of AI in the classroom and it will occupy a space on the bookshelf in my office as a reference guide for the foreseeable future.

Thorough & Informative, but could be better with references.
[...]There are many books like this on the market, and I’ve read most of them. Given the speed at which AI has taken over our tech-based world, books on the subject are often self-published and very basic. The Power of AI, while following this trend, is a refreshing addition to the conversation. The book covers most of the key issues involving AI’s use in education, such as assessment, application to various topics, benefits to students and instructors, legal implications, etc. It is also written in a confident, straightforward manner, so it is easy to digest for teachers of any level. The author is unabashedly pro-AI, and the benefits of using AI — along with the claim that it is inevitable — are perhaps a bit overworked. As a result, the book does not address many of the potential problems with AI, even some very serious and realistic challenges, which should be considered by anyone using or considering adopting AI in their courses. Finally, I found the lack of references extremely problematic. Given the amount of studies and material already written about AI, the author’s claims would be stronger if they were appropriately and adequately cited — a problem, I should note, that will increasingly become more of an issue the more that people use AI (i.e., it seems that using references is not considered a priority in AI-world). Overall, the book is worth a read — just do not expect to be guided to additional material or to the resources this author used when writing the book.
